The bar tells you whether the weight is heavy before the number on the plates does. A triple at RPE 8 that moves like a triple at RPE 6 is not an RPE 8, no matter what the program says. Most lifters feel this and ignore it. The feeling is data, and it is the cheapest autoregulation you will ever own.
Velocity based training got expensive for no good reason. The phrase now arrives attached to a linear position transducer, a clip that magnets to the bar, and a price tag. The device is useful, but it sells the idea that the signal lives in the hardware. It does not. The signal lives in the bar, and it always has. The device reads it to three decimal places. Your eyes read it to one, and one is usually enough.
What bar speed actually measures
A given load moves at a given speed when you are fresh. Add fatigue, subtract sleep, stack a bad week of food, and the same load moves slower. The bar does not care about your RPE estimate. It responds to the force you can produce on the day, and force shows up as speed.
This is what the spreadsheet cannot see. It knows you hit 5x3 @ 150kg last Tuesday and it has you down for 5x3 @ 152.5kg today. It does not know you slept five hours and skipped two meals. The bar knows. The first rep comes off the floor a beat slower than it should, and the day has already told you something the program did not.
Zatsiorsky framed this before anyone clipped a sensor to a barbell: the same absolute weight is a different stimulus depending on the speed you move it. A grinder and a snappy rep at the same load are not the same set. Hatfield put it plainer. You train the intent to move fast, and the bar reports whether the intent survived contact with the weight.
The naked-eye read
You do not need a number. You need a baseline and the honesty to compare against it.
Watch the first rep of your first working set. Not the warm-ups, which lie because they are light, and not the last set, which lies because it is fatigued. The first working rep is your reference. You already know, in your body, what it looks like on a normal day. Compare today's against it before you decide what the session is.
Three outcomes:
- The bar moves like it should. The plan is the plan. Run it.
- The bar moves faster than baseline. You undershot, or you are having a good day. Earn the right to add a little, but earn it across a set, not in one jump.
- The bar moves slower than baseline. The weight is heavier than the number says. This is the signal most lifters override, and overriding it is how a hard week becomes a stalled month.
The slow bar is the one worth respecting. A first rep that grinds when it should glide is the clearest early warning you get, earlier than soreness, earlier than the deload you would otherwise schedule too late.
Velocity loss, without the math
The second read is about when to stop a set, not whether to start it.
Within a set, every rep is a little slower than the one before. That is fatigue accumulating. González-Badillo and Sánchez-Medina spent years confirming the useful part: the percentage drop in speed across a set tracks how much fatigue you are buying. Cut the set when speed drops past a threshold, and you keep most of the strength stimulus while paying far less in fatigue.
Run a crude version with your eyes. When a rep moves at roughly half the speed of your first, you are deep into the grind, and the reps after it cost more than they return. You do not need to know whether the drop was 18 percent or 23 percent. You need to know the rep got ugly, and that the next three ugly reps are fatigue you pay for on the next lift and the next session.
This is why I rarely program a true AMRAP for a strength block. The last few reps of an all-out set are the slowest and the least specific to a one rep max, which moves fast by definition. The bar already told you the set was done. The ego asked for two more.
The device is optional, not useless
A sensor removes the argument. It catches a four percent drop your eyes would call "fine," and for an advanced lifter peaking for a meet, four percent is the difference between a smart session and a wasted one. If you compete, buy it. It sharpens a read you already have.
For everyone else, it solves a precision problem you do not yet have. A lifter who cannot tell a fast triple from a slow one by eye will not be saved by a number on a screen. They will just have a number they cannot act on. The skill is the read. The hardware refines it; it does not replace it.
How to build the read
Start on your next heavy session. Before the working weight, watch one warm-up at a load you know well and say out loud how it moved. Fast. Normal. Slow. Do the same for your first working rep. A reference takes a few sessions to set.
Write it down. Not the speed, which you cannot measure, but the verdict: "bar slow today, held load." Over a block those notes become a record of which weeks your body was lying to your motivation, and which weeks your motivation was lying to your body. The log is where the read turns from a feeling into a pattern you can trust.
The lifters who progress longest are not the ones who push hardest every session. They are the ones who can tell, from the first rep, what kind of day it is, and adjust before the day adjusts them. The bar has been telling them all along. They just learned to watch it.
